RJD2 Leaves Definitive Jux to Sign with UK Label XL Recordings.
With a New Label and a New Direction Musician/Producer Extraordinaire RJD2 is Making Moves in More Ways than One.
If you've been under a rock somewhere and don't know, appreciate, and big the hell out of RJ on a near-daily basis you best get to playin' catch-up. -but then you'll still be behind, because RJD2 is Making Moves!
Born in Oregon, RJ first made a name for himself in Ohio around 1988 as the Producer for the Megahertz Crew. Weathermen... Stop me if you've heard this one... RJ moved on to release his first solo LP, Dead Ringer, in 2002. Consider it a must-have on the level of the earlier DJ Shadow albums. Soul Position, the Magnificent City Project (ACD2)... Remixing Dallas' Polyphonic Spree, Massive Attack, or Tweet... The Resume is Impressive.
Whatever you think you know about RJD2...
Get ready for something new. -Word is, this spring he's taking it to another level.
Expect a change comparable in approach to the one taken recently by DJ Shadow... -but don't expect Hyphy.
and although he's saying,
"I've gone rap free in 2006..."
-Don't Expect a Complete Departure from Hip-hop Music because that isn't necessarily what he's done. RJ is simply expanding his repertoire:
"when i said "rap free in 2006", it was a joke in regards to the fact that i dont have any mc's on my new record. im not signing off forever on doing rap music, i just gotta change the way i do shit. so dont pull that "i told you so" shit if i do some production with some mc's in a year, or 6 months, or two weeks."
MPC->ProTools for Shadow.
MPC->ProTools->Live Instrumentation and a Touring Band for RJD2.
Not to limit or categorize him in any way, but the man is a Hiphop Musician. This doesn't necessarily mean that he is restricted to the use of traditional Hiphop Palette of Turntables, Samplers, and Spoken Word Rhyme, but rather that he is a musician with a Hiphop Sensibility and, therefore, just because a particular set of music he records may not be "Hip-Hop," we shouldn't expect that the music does not apply to us. He will bring a certain flavor in the combinations and arrangements he creates that will be undeniably Hiphop. Even if the music is Rock. Even if it is Jazz. -as he is Hiphop. Without a doubt. An argument could be made that everything in this world post 1970 either is Hiphop itself, or has been affected by Hiphop. As we move further and further away from 1970 this will becom more and more true. Expect big things! -both for RJD2 and Hiphop Kulture.
Watch for RJD2's to-be-titled New Album between February and May on XL Recordings.
Oct. 4th:
Update- RJ's preparing to begin Mixing the New Album in the studio of Larry Gold. "the home of cry me a river, jill scott, musiq, bilal, and way too many more to mention. platinum plaques line the wall like that dr. dre video."
This is the first of his solo releases to be mixed in a real studio.
