""My 12-year-old is kinda jealous because they don't have it in Perry Township," says Audrey Satterblom of IPS."
The skating program actually grew as a result of a question that a student asked in PE several years ago. At that time the answer was, of course, "...no way," but as public perception has changed so has the school district's: Teachers may now give students a break from the grind by teaching them to grind.
Some parents, concerned about safety issues, will be opposed to the skating classes, and it's not entirely unfounded as one student commented, "I've broke bones, yeah, but it's fun. It gets your adrenaline going. It's better than all the other sports." -but that ignores the true facts. Statistically, one is much more likely to get injured playing basketball; Studies actually show skateboarding to be one of the least least dangerous sports a person is likely to be involved with.
A local skatepark will help launch the program which will, initially be taught on flatground.
